New Community Centre at Croke Park

Aileen Foran talks to Ger Leddin on Northside Today about the new Barbara Ward Clonliffe and Croke Park Community Centre which was opened recently. Aileen talks about the work involved in setting up the centre, the activities that will take place there, how it is funded and how the funding will be maintained. She also explains that the community centre has been dedicated to the memory of local community leader Barbara Ward, who sadly passed away during 2012.

St Kevin’s Boys V’s Sheriff YC – Full match podcast

As part of the Northside Football series Near FM broadcast live and uninterrupted coverage of St Kevin’s Boys v’s Sheriff YC in the quarter-final of the AUL Cup from Shanowen Road in Santry on Thursday May 16th. The match was a close encounter with two great footballing teams competing for a semi-final place. Sheriff edged it 2-0 on the night to advance. Programme 1

The Jomac Show is a 2 part radio series about the history of the voluntary entertainment and variety group – Jomac.

Since 1953 the Jomac show has being entertaining thousands of Dubliners across the City. For more than 60 years this group of volunteers has been entertaining young and old alike across the city in hospitals, old people’s homes and orphanages. The Jomac Show brought light relief to its audiences and through the years has featured singers, dancers, musicians, comedians and magicians. Among its alumni down through the years have been entertainers such as the Brannigans, Butch Moore, Joe Cuddy, the Bachelors and Noel V Ginnity.

In programme 1 we meet founding members Robert McLoughlin and Joe Maguire as well as Denis Duffy and Joe O’Connor, who share their memories of life in inner city Dublin and The Jomac Show.

The series is devised and produced by Beaumont resident, Joe O’Connor, a former member and leader with St Francis Xavier Boys Club and his son, Nearfm volunteer Dave O’Connor, with the assistance of the Sound & Vision Fund, a BAI initiative.

In programme 2 we meet join the audience for the end of season show in Sybil Nursing Home, Killester. We meet performers Muriel Casey. Kevin Masterson and Mike Stevens and many of the audience. We also hear from Joe Cuddy and Jim Synott as well as Dec Cluskey from The Bachelors, who share their memories of the Jomac experience.

29. Bootcamp

Bootcamp is a military style fitness training program that has been putting Irish men and women through their paces since 2004. All the training takes place outdoors and Near Fm’s Mark Staunton bravely volunteered to take part in a class on a very cold winters evening in Marino College. The classes are tough but there is great encouragement given from both the instructors and fellow participants and a real sense of camaraderie. 28. Snooker

Cross Guns Snooker Club is the oldest snooker club in Ireland and was established way back in 1958. Today the club is still a vibrant hotspot for lovers of the game of snooker and the club has endured through the game’s many ups and downs from the boom years of the 1970′s and 80′s to the cull of clubs in the city throughout the 1990′s. Cross Guns is a family run club that has produced a number of national champions at various age levels. David Caulfield went along to the club to talk to owner Fin Ruane about the club and the sport. Also featuring Mark Dawney and Phillip Browne. Produced by David Caulfield.

27. Water-polo

Water-polo is team water-sport that combines elements of hand-ball, swimming and even rugby. It has been played in Ireland since the late 1800′s and was among the first team sports introduced into the modern Olympic games in 1900. Edd Kealy went along to a tournament at the Guinness Pool at St.Jame’s gate to find out about what can be a very physical sport. Featuring Bert O’Brien, Martin Kelligan, Cillian and Tiernan Colvin, Jack Reilly, Nicky O’Mara, Jim McConvey and Kevin O’Sullivan.

26. Sailing

Malahide Yacht Club started life back in 1958 and over its history has been extremely successful, producing an Olympic silver medalist, had competitors represent Ireland in 9 Olympic games as well as producing numerous national champions. Edd Kealy went along to the clubs state-of-the-art dinghy sailing center at Broadmeadows estuary in Malahide to find out more about the sport of sailing and the club. Featuring Olympian Ciara Peelo, talented young sailor Lizzy McDowell and  the Commodore and Vice-Commodore of Malahide Yacht Club, Bob Sugrue and Graham Smith.
